I know this is a LND board, but this particular topic is something that I'm very passionate about, and I am eager to help other people become aware of such issues, and encourage them to help support putting a stop to them. This is why I'm creating this thread: so that you can share your experiences in as much or little detail as you want, gain support from those of us on this board, and help you become aware of the real problems in the world, as well as inform you on how you can help!
For me, sexual violence has been a part of my life for a very long time. When I was a little girl (8 years old), I was raped by my father; not only once, but twice. I never reported it, and waited up until recently (years later) to try to get protection from the government. I come from an abusive family; I've gotten verbal, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse from both of my parents. I'm still in the middle of the legal matters, and I am being forced to continue to live with this abusive family until those can be settled.
What is the most important thing that I've learned through all of my experiences? Don't blow it off. Make people aware of what you're going through, or what other people are going through. If you don't tell anyone, the situation will not go away on its own.
The month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and I strongly encourage everyone to get actively involved; this is coming from a "survivor". People like me need people like you to get involved, to share your stories, to help others.
Link to a very informative, helpful website.
And to get the discussion going, here are a few questions:
Have you ever experienced violence (i.e sexual assault, bullying in school, etc.)?
What did you do about it?
Do you think you made the right decision about telling/not telling someone about your experiences?
What are some of your ideas to help raise awareness for violence/sexual assault?
Edit: Forum title edited for more clarity.
